What do child health clinics do?

Whether you’re using our services for the first time or you’re a regular, it’s normal to wonder “What do child health clinics do?” Child health clinics exist to ensure your child is thriving and protected against certain diseases. Our children’s health centre benefits from the insights of medical professionals who can measure development. To do this, we use simple tests to see how your child is developing compared to other children in Australia who are the same age as them. It’s normal for children to deviate outside of their normal range a little. However, if we do suspect something is wrong, we’ll work with other children’s health specialists to provide your child with the support they need.

What do child health clinics do for vaccinations?

A significant part of attending a kids’ health clinic is about routine vaccinations. From the first few months of your child’s life, they’ll benefit from an immunisation schedule. This schedule is based on strong evidence and it’s designed to guard your child against deadly diseases. You’ll be given an immunisation handbook, and we’ll hold an immunisation record.

The Australian immunisation schedule usually involves the following vaccinations:

  • Birth: Hepatitis B
  • Two-months: HepB, Diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, polio, rotavirus, pneumococcal diseases
  • Four-months: HepB, Diphtheria, tetanus, polio, pneumococcal disease, rotavirus
  • Six months: All the above, but with influenza, as well as conditions that persons from the Aboriginal and Torres-Strait community are at high risk of developing.
  • 12 months: MMR, meningitis ACWY, pneumococcal disease, and hepatitis A for some children.
  • 18 months: MMR, Haemophilus influenza B, chicken pox, diphtheria, and hepatitis A for some children.
  • Four years: diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus, polio, and pneumococcal diseases in some cases.
  • 10 to 15 years: HPV and diphtheria

While the child immunisation schedule may seem like a lot, many of these diseases are vaccinated against using a single injection. If you have any concerns about the Australian immunisation schedule, we’re happy to discuss them with you.

What other children’s health services do you provide?

Our children’s clinic offers more than baby vaccination. We’re also here to assist with some of the more difficult aspects of keeping your child healthy. From feeding in their earlier years to concerns about hearing, our friendly team of professionals can help you keep your child’s development on track. In some cases, this may involve referring you to other allied health professionals. For example, if we suspect your child is suffering from hearing problems, we can send them to an audiologist.

At Sydney CBD Medical Centre, we want to ensure you always have a professional to turn to when you’re concerned about your child’s health. If you suspect they’re acutely unwell, always seek medical advice immediately. However, if you’re worried that they have a long-lasting condition, we’re the right team for you. In addition to monitoring their developmental progress, we can screen for many of the conditions you may worry about. We also offer Medicare bulk billing payments, which means our children’s health services are accessible to all.
